Winter Games Athletes
Fontana has won a bronze medal in each of the last two Winter Olympics and will seek an even better finish in Sochi. At just 15 years old, she became the youngest Winter Games athlete from Italy to win a medal when she was part of a 3,000-meter relay team that benefited from China's disqualification at Turin in 2006. She didn't need such luck in the 500 meters in Vancouver and finished less than a tenth of a second from taking a silver away from Canada's Marianne St-Gelais. That individual medal was the first by an Italian woman in short track speedskating. She followed that performance with a stellar 2011-12 World Cup campaign in which she won eight golds and claimed the overall title. She earned eight medals in this past season's competition (one gold) and finished third in the overall standings in the 500 and 1,000 meters. Fontana was second in the 500 at the 2011 and 2012 world championships and came in third in the overall standings both times. She's won eight career medals at worlds but no golds. Her only junior world title came in 2009 as part of the 3,000 relay. Fontana has won five overall crowns at the European championships.
